For the first time, you can buy a Kia Telluride as a hybrid. It is more powerful and much more efficient than the gas model, but it costs about $2,700 more on a like-for-like trim. It also gives up some towing capacity and the off-road X-Pro trims.
Quick answer: If you drive around 15,000 miles a year and keep your vehicle for four years or longer, the hybrid has a good chance of recovering its higher purchase price through fuel savings. At around 12,000 miles annually, expect roughly four years or slightly longer to break even. If you tow over 4,500 pounds or want the X-Pro, stick with the gas model.
Here is the full breakdown.

The hybrid wins on power and fuel economy. The gas model wins on towing, starting price and trim choice. The cheapest hybrid is the EX at $48,035; the cheapest gas Telluride is the LX at $40,735.
How the Telluride Hybrid Works
The hybrid pairs the same 2.5-liter turbo engine with two electric motors and a small battery. You never plug it in. The battery recharges itself when you brake and coast.
The electric motors help most when pulling away from a stop. That is exactly where the gas turbo-four feels weakest. Kelley Blue Book's testers found the gas model had noticeable throttle lag from a stop, while the hybrid felt quiet, responsive and more composed. There are no separate EV or hybrid modes to manage. The system switches on its own.
The Real Money Math: When Does the Hybrid Pay Off?
The hybrid costs $2,700 more than a gas Telluride with the same trim and drivetrain, for both EX FWD and EX AWD. Here is how long fuel savings take to cover that gap at $3.25 per gallon:
|
Miles per year |
FWD yearly savings |

AWD yearly savings |

|---|---|---|---|---|
|

2.5 years |
$1,153 |

Based on EPA combined ratings: 22 vs 35 mpg (FWD) and 20 vs 31 mpg (AWD).
How we calculated it: yearly savings = miles × fuel price × (1 ÷ gas mpg − 1 ÷ hybrid mpg). Payback = $2,700 ÷ yearly savings.
Two things can change your result:
- Your driving style. Hybrids save the most in stop-and-go city traffic. KBB's tester got a few mpg below the 31 mpg AWD rating, so treat EPA numbers as a best case.
- Fuel prices. If gas rises to $4 a gallon, every payback time above drops by about 20%.
What You Give Up With the Hybrid
- 500 pounds of towing. The hybrid tows 4,500 lb vs 5,000 lb for the gas model. That's fine for most small campers, but check your trailer's loaded weight.
- The X-Pro trims. The off-road X-Pro, with all-terrain tires and 9.1 inches of ground clearance, is gas-only. The hybrid's most rugged option is the X-Line SX, which has the look but not the X-Pro hardware.
- A cheaper entry point. There's no hybrid LX or S. The hybrid starts at $48,035, which is $7,300 more than the cheapest gas Telluride.

The EX Hybrid is the value pick. It has the shortest payback time and still includes the features most families want.
Range: Fewer Trips to the Pump
The hybrid EX FWD can travel up to 637 miles on a tank, according to Edmunds. For road-trip families, that means fewer stops, which is a benefit that doesn't show up in the payback math.
Hybrid Rivals to Consider
If you've decided you want a hybrid three-row SUV, cross-shop these two:
- Hyundai Palisade Hybrid: the Telluride's corporate cousin, with a similar hybrid setup
- Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: Toyota's hybrid track record and strong resale value
